Bench Bar: In Town or Out? You Decide

The Austin Bar Association's Bench Bar Committee is asking for input from association members on how to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Bench Bar Conference.

Austin Bar members for whom we have e-mail addresses received an e-mail Friday, Oct. 16 from Ballot Box software asking for participation in a very short poll on where the 2010 Bench Bar Conference should be held.

Please let us know your thoughts on whether the conference should be held in Austin or out-of-town and what types of issues you are interested in discussing with other attorneys and judges. You have until Oct. 29 to participate.

Please contact Kat Hinson at Kat@austinbar.org or 472-0279, x107 with any questions or problems with the poll. Please make sure your spam filter is set to receive e-mails from BallotBox@BallotBoxOnline.com. If you did not receive a ballot, please check your spam filter.

Komen Race for the Cure, Nov. 1

Everyone knows someone who has either personally fought or helped another woman fight breast cancer. It's time to lace up your running, skipping, or walking shoes to show your support for these courageous women.

On Oct. 1, the Austin legal community lost Rana Siam, a shareholder at Clark, Thomas & Winters, to breast cancer. A coach for the McCallum High School Mock Trial Team, Siam was deeply committed to several organizations and gave of her time freely. In her memory, donations can be made to Susan G. Komen for the Cure here.

The Austin Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure was established in late 1999 to spread the life-saving message of early detection and to support breast cancer screening, treatment and diagnostic programs in Central Texas. Komen Austin has granted nearly $7 Million since 1999 to fund these programs.

To ensure that the good work of Susan G. Komen continues, please sign-up today for the upcoming Komen Race for the Cure. Race information can be found by clicking here. Create your own team or join the Austin Affiliate team or the Remembering Rana team. Make a difference by signing up today!

Capital Area Paralegals Association Seeking Firms to Host Interns

The Capital Area Paralegal Association has designated a committee to facilitate the placement of paralegal studies students from local colleges and universities into law firms or corporations with legal departments in the Austin area.

After an initial interview with the student, CAPA will contact a company from a listing of companies that have shown an interest in utilizing a student intern, and pass the name and resume of the student along to the company. At that point they ask the interested company to contact the student directly via phone or email to set up a mutually convenient time to meet. During that meeting, if the company decides to offer the student an intern position, the company and the intern can work out the details of scheduling. Most of the students will be required to work an average of 15 hours per week for 10 weeks.

A salary is not required for the interns but it is required that the company pay the one-time $25 membership fee for the student to join CAPA. It is also strongly encouraged that the company or firm pay the intern’s parking fees, if applicable.

If you have further questions regarding the program, please feel free to call or e-mail Jim Barringer at 750-9292 or jim@barringerlegalcopies.com.
